MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I believe a teacher plays an important role in shaping a pupil’s musical identity. I see myself not only as an instructor, but also as a musical role model, whose attitude towards music can influence a pupil’s motivation, enjoyment, and long-term development. Teaching, to me, is not just about passing on skills, but about guiding pupils to discover who they are through music.

I encourage pupils to become independent and thoughtful learners by helping them listen more deeply, explore ideas, and find their own musical solutions. By sharing my own experiences as a performer and teacher, I support pupils in shaping their individual musical paths, whether they see themselves as performers, amateur musicians, listeners, or future teachers. My hope is that each pupil can build a meaningful and lasting relationship with music that stays with them beyond lessons and exams.

THE JOY OF LEARNING MUSIC THEORY

I find real joy in music theory because it changes the way we understand and experience music. For me, music theory is never just about passing exams. It helps me make sense of the notes on the page, understand how a piece is constructed, and hear the composer’s intentions more clearly. When I share this way of thinking with pupils, I often see their playing become more confident, expressive, and meaningful.

Understanding harmony, structure, and musical language allows us to move beyond simply playing the right notes, and instead tell a story with clarity and purpose. I believe music theory connects technique with artistry, giving musicians the freedom to play with intention and deeper musical awareness.

Working as a Collaborative Pianist

As both a teacher and a collaborative pianist, I believe the most important role I have is to foster a joy of music-making that can last a lifetime. I aim to help pupils develop their own authentic musical voice, while learning how to listen, respond, and make music together.

I also encourage pupils to appreciate how consistent and conscious practice leads to discovery and growth. Practice, in my view, should not feel mechanical or pressured. When approached with curiosity and intention, it becomes a source of inspiration, enjoyment, and continual musical discovery.

LESSONS

Lessons are offered both in person and online, allowing pupils to learn in the way that suits them best. I provide personalised one-to-one piano lessons in a warm, supportive environment, where learning is engaging, enjoyable, and confidence-building. Music theory tuition is also available at Grade 5 and Grade 8 levels.

In addition to teaching, I offer professional piano accompaniment for examinations and auditions, including ABRSM, Trinity, and GCSE Music, supporting instrumentalists with sensitive and well-prepared collaboration.

In-person lessons take place in my home studio in WA2, Warrington, featuring a Boston Grand 178 piano. Online lessons are available worldwide via Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, or FaceTime. Teaching is available in both English and Cantonese.

Piano LESSONS

Piano lessons are available in 30, 45, or 60-minute sessions for pupils of all ages, from age 4 through to adult learners. I teach pupils from complete beginners to advanced level, including diploma preparation.

Each lesson is carefully tailored to the pupil’s individual goals, whether learning for enjoyment, returning to the piano after a break, or preparing for ABRSM or Trinity examinations. Lessons focus on developing healthy technique, strong musical foundations, and thoughtful repertoire analysis, encouraging pupils to practise with confidence, think musically, and build a lasting relationship with music.
